What’s in a picture?

You know the old saying “a picture is worth a thousand words”, well that’s never been more true than right now in the online advertising world. Picking the right image can be crucial to having an effective online campaign. Here’s a recent example of a Facebook AD campaign that I created for my wife’s new The Fly Mommy blog (and yes this is also a plug for my wife’s blog…remember she is a 3rd degree blackbelt…so I try to keep her happy)

Anyways, I set up a Facebook campaign targeting a specific group of Mommy’s around America. I utilized the same exact headline and text for each ad but I varied the picture.
Here’s what ad number 1 looks like:

Here’s Ad number 2, with same text and different image:

Here’s Ad number 3, with same text and different image:

And the far away winner is…..Ad #1. How did I decipher the winner? By the average click thru data, the data tells me how many people saw the ad and then clicked on it for more information. Ad #1 had 8 to 10x better click thrus than the other ads.

A few closing thoughts, the bigger image definitely helps, but it’s really the substance of the image. The big image gives 4 distinct teases of what is going to be covered in the Travel Blog, so the reader can instantly have an association with any or all images. The second image while very cute does nothing to add to what the blog is about. The third image is just the logo, and while it’s a great logo….it’s just a logo…
